NDP calls for illegal eviction crackdown after 92-year old man forced from his Little Italy home of 20 years

TORONTO — Ontario NDP MPP Jessica Bell (University—Rosedale) called on the Ford government to crack down on illegal evictions in response to the forced eviction of a 92-year man from his apartment of 20 years.

Isidoro Ventullo was illegally evicted from his home during a heatwave last summer because the landlord claimed he wanted to move into his tiny apartment. The building has since been listed for sale for over two million dollars.

“While Isidoro risked being homeless, his landlord was getting ready to sell the property for over $2 million,” said Bell. “What does it say about Doug Ford’s Ontario when a senior can be kicked to the curb in the middle of a heat wave?

“We need to protect renters and get serious about housing affordability. That’s why I am introducing a bill to bring in stronger eviction rules, better enforcement, and bigger fines to send a clear message to bad actors: it is never worth it to illegally evict a rule-abiding tenant.”
