NDP: Ford Conservatives must take action to prevent a power emergency in Ontario

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP critic for Energy and Climate Action MPP Peter Tabuns (Toronto – Danforth) rose in the Legislature during question period to sound the alarm on the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) report that warns Ontario is at risk of power outages this summer.

“Ontario is the only province in Canada that is rated with elevated risk that it can’t meet peak demand. Five years of cutting funding for efficiency and conservation, demolishing wind farms and cancelling renewable projects have led us to this.

What will this government do to protect this province from the risk you set up?”

Tabuns directed his question to the Minister of Energy and called on the Ford Conservatives to take action to ensure Ontarians don’t face a power emergency this summer due to the grid’s capacity issues. The latest NERC report highlights the reliability risk facing Ontario’s grid and put the province on its warning list.

“We have known for 20 years that nuclear generators were going to be refurbished, known about the need for power, and that the refusal to act on the climate crisis will lead to extreme hot weather with increased demand for power.

What will the Ford Conservatives do to avoid a power emergency this summer?”
