Premier jeopardizes made-in-Ontario EV program: NDP

QUEEN’S PARK—Official Opposition NDP Leader Marit Stiles says Doug Ford is jeopardizing the province’s made-in-Ontario electric vehicle (EV) program—and the tens of thousands of good jobs that go with it—by refusing to show decisive leadership on encouraging EV sales:

“Doug Ford is jeopardizing Ontario’s chances of being a global leader in EV production and securing the tens of thousands of good jobs a thriving, made-in-Ontario EV program would bring.

EV sales are down.

Yet the Conservatives' anemic housing bill fails to mandate that new homes be EV charger- ready, which would have made it cheaper and easy for drivers to make the switch. He's failing to secure good local jobs in EV production and to ensure the billions the province has gotten in EV-related investments don’t go to waste.

Ontarians want a decisive and forward-thinking leader.

Doug Ford proves he’s none of these things: he ripped up EV infrastructure and cancelled EV rebates in 2019; he’s letting down workers in Oakville by being missing-in-action on the delay of EV production by Ford Motor Co.; and he’s jeopardizing EV sales and production with a short-sighted decision not to make new homes EV charger-ready.”
